Find conditions describing publication without payment. Save the source, date and requirements: some directories only accept local businesses or alumni. When information is missing or expired, keep the opportunity under review.
Separately check availability, account requirements and the published link. A free tool feature does not prove that its backlink service is free.

Locate the link and inspect rel: several values may appear together. Record its target and redirects. The absence of nofollow does not guarantee crawling or value from search engines.
A link that requires sign-in or is created with JavaScript may not appear in static HTML. Keep the outcome unverified and document the limitation.

A ping can announce a URL, but cannot make a search engine add it to its index. Check HTTP, robots.txt, noindex and canonical. Separate technical diagnosis from indexing status.
For a property you manage, use authorised Search Console access when available. Google Translate or publishing a collection does not confirm indexing.
